Care for Tribes

Southeast Asia

From the Founder

สวัสดีทุกาน,

For the past three years in northern Thailand, the Neo-Humanist Foundation has been putting attention and focus into starting social service projects like Sanitation for the Hill Tribes. This project is important because sanitation for poor families is essential in preventing disease and promoting hygiene in society. Normally in North Thailand’s tourist city of Chiang Mai, the average annual temperature is a pleasant 25 degrees celsius, but due to global climate change, the cold winter season night-time lows can drop below 10 degrees C (50 degrees F) in the city and 4 degrees C (39 degrees F) in the mountains where I work. Doi Inthanon and other peaks often experience freezing conditions at night. Currently, people go to the toilet in the jungle at a considerable distance from the village.

Can you imagine what would happen where a child or an elderly grandmother needs to go to toilet in the jungle in the middle of the night during rainy or cold weather? Risks of injury due to falling, insect and snake bites, and exposure to the elements are common occurrences and account for many of the difficulties that the young and elderly of the poor hill tribes face. For more than 3 years now, I have been working and trying my very best to provide sanitation for the poor families who live in the hilly areas around Doi Inthanon (which is the highest mountain in Thailand). Chiang Mai has six different hill tribes in the area which are still existing and trying to survive until now, namely the Karen, Hmong, Lahu, Akha, Lisu, Mien, and the Padaung. With your help, we can do more service to these tribes, sustain their endangered way of life, and promote their beautiful culture around the world, especially to the youth.
